Day 48 — The Holy Spirit Comes Mightily Upon David From That Day Forward
1 Samuel 16:13; Psalm 51; Psalm 139
1 Samuel 16:13
Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward.
1 Samuel 19:18-24
1. David fleeing from Saul to Samuel
2. Saul sends messengers to Naioth targeting David
3. The messengers see prophets prophesying and the Spirit of the Lord came upon them and they also prophesied.
4. Saul sends more messengers, same thing, they prophesy.
5. Saul send more and they do the same, not killing David.
6. Saul goes himself to get it done and on the way, “the Spirit of God came on him also”
a. continuously prophesying while traveling
b. stripped and lay naked before Samuel day and night
c. people mocked—Saul a prophet also?
2 Samuel 23:1-5
1 The oracle of David, the son of Jesse, the oracle of the man who was raised on high,
the anointed of the God of Jacob, the sweet psalmist of Israel:
2 “The Spirit of the Lord speaks by me; his word is on my tongue.
3 The God of Israel has spoken; the Rock of Israel has said to me: When one rules justly over
men, ruling in the fear of God,
4* He dawns on them like the morning light, like the sun shining forth on a cloudless morning,
5 For does not my house stand so with God? For he has made with me an everlasting covenant,
ordered in all things and secure.
Psalm 51:9-11
9 Hide Your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquities.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me away from Your presence, And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And sustain me with a willing spirit.
13 Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners will be converted to You.
15* O Lord, open my lips, That my mouth may declare Your praise.
Psalm 104:24-31
O Lord, how many are Your works!
In wisdom You made them all.
You send forth Your Spirit, they are created; and You renew the face of the ground.
Let the glory of the Lord endure forever, Let the Lord be glad in all His works.
Psalm 106:33
It went hard with Moses on their account;
Because they were rebellious against His Spirit
Psalm 139
1* O Lord, You have searched me and known me
2* You understand my thought from afar
3* You scrutinize my path and my lying down and are intimately acquainted with all my ways.
7* Where can I go from Your Spirit?
23* Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my anxious thoughts;
24* And see if there be any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.
Observations:
1. Before David was anointed by Samuel, he was already writing worship as a shepherd.
2. It says the Holy Spirit was to be upon him from that time forward—even the good and bad.
3. David felt conviction about cutting cloth from Saul’s garment even though he was anointed by Samuel to
be king and had opportunity to easily claim that by killing Saul in the cave.
4. David was going to take revenge on Nabal, but responded with repentance to Abigail’s appeal.
5. He confesses his sin with Bathsheba, regretting the sense that the Holy Spirit shouldn’t tolerate that.
6. With restoration comes the ability to teach sinners and declare God’s praise.
7. God’s Spirit is involved in all creation.
8. People full of the Holy Spirit want God’s glory.
9. The Holy Spirit is everywhere and all knowing
10. The Spirit leads.
Questions:
1. How can someone who is anointed and full of the Spirit from that day forward sin?
Where was the Holy Spirit when David was tempted with Bathsheba?
2. David asked, “Who is this uncircumcised Philistine taunting the armies of the living God?”
Was he led by a) his faith in God, b) his sense of indignation that no one stepped forward,
c) the confidence that he has done hard things with wolves and bears, or d) the Holy Spirit whispered
in his ear?
How do you know the difference between self-confidence and faith in God?
3. Saul had experiences with the Holy Spirit and then when he disobeyed, God allowed an evil spirit to
torment him. How was it that David was given full access to the Holy Spirit and Saul had it revoked?
Wasn’t Saul’s offering a sacrifice to God before battle when Samuel was late less of an offense than
David’s sending Uriah off to the front lines and committing adultery with his wife?
4. Are there any other things about David’s actions that make you question whether he was walking in the
Spirit?
5. Read Psalm 73 and describe the his thoughts before and after he “came into the sanctuary of God?”
Was that transformation the Holy Spirit?
6. The Holy Spirit gave David a broken and contrite heart (Ps 51). Is there an area of your life that
you have not yet faced and are resisting the Holy Spirit?
