John 16:5—17:26

“It is to your advantage that I go away.  The coming of the Helper depends on it.”  16:7

14.  He will convict the world concerning sin.  (They don’t believe)  
15.  He will convict the world concerning righteousness.  (Jesus goes to the Father) 
16.  He will convict the world concerning judgment.  (Satan is judged) 
17.  The Spirit of truth will guide you into all truth.                                                             
18.  The Spirit of truth will share what He hears from the Father and Son                            
19.  The Spirit of truth will disclose what is to come                                                             
20.  The Spirit will glorify Jesus                                                                                              

  
Jesus speaks to us:

 ·     To keep us from stumbling.   16:1
·      So that we will remember He warned us when the hour comes.  16:4
·      He knows it brings them sorrow.     16:6
·      He has more to say, but they couldn’t bear it yet.    16:12
·      Figuratively at this time, but will speak plainly    16:25
·      After encouraging prayer in His name, they say He’s speaking plainly. 16:29
·      That we may have peace in Him, but the world gives tribulation.    16:33
·     “I speak in the world so that they may have My joy in themselves.”  17:13     

 Wonderful Promises about Prayer  (“In that day”) John 16:23-27

1.   “If you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you.”                           
2.  “Until now you’ve asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full.”
3.  “You will ask in My name [directly to the Father who loves you] because you have loved Me and believe I came from Him.”

Questions:

1.   How does the world perceive the Holy Spirit?

2. What do we need to do to have the Holy Spirit disclose truth and what is to come?

3. Would the Holy Spirit like us to focus on the Holy Spirit?

4. If you are walking in the Holy Spirit, and you are praised, how is Jesus glorified without false humility?

5.  Can one learn truth apart from the Holy Spirit?

6.  Can we pray without the Holy Spirit’s help?

7.  What is the day that Jesus is speaking of when these promises of prayer will come about?  
On the day He spoke? At Pentecost? In the last days?

8. John 16:24 says they hadn’t asked in His name yet. 
What about their 2×2 mission to cast out demons and heal.  Was that not in His name?

9.  Why does God answer our prayers if He is omniscient and we are not?
