Day 1 : “Please Don’t Leave Us”
John 13:36 – 14:24
Preparing the Disciples
Before Passover, Jesus (The Passover Lamb), knew His hour had come. He knelt and washed the disciples’ feet, modeling the servant-heart He desired for them. After Judas left to carry out his betrayal, Jesus knowingly warned them:
“I am with you a little while longer… where I am going, you cannot come.”
“If you love each other, men will know you follow Me.”
Peter Reacts
I have just spent 3 years of my life, having left my business, my family and control of
my plans and followed a man who spoke words of truth and love that I have not heard
from any of my prior mentors or rabbis. I am convinced that he is the greatest man
to walk the earth, the Messiah, and I have been a part of his inner circle.
The past months have been full of fantastic miracles: feeding 5,000 with a
few fish from a boy, restoration of a psychotic cemetery screamer to his right mind,
raising a friend from the dead after 3 days.
Now he has called for a dinner to be arranged where he tells us this phase of the trek
is over and we are going on without him. His mission is complete and He is leaving
us with a new thing.
We have argued who would be the greatest, but without him, I don’t feel so great.
Lord, where are You going? This is ominous. It sounds like your last words
“Where I go, you cannot follow Me now; but you will follow later.” 13:36
Lord, why can I not follow You right now? I would die for You.
“Will you lay down your life for Me?” 13:38
Wait! No one else has the words of eternal life! Where else could we go?
You told us You were going to Jerusalem to die a couple times, but it didn’t seem like
more than a statement of purpose…but are You going to actually die?!
Where are You going that we can’t be with You?!
“Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me.” 14:1
I do believe, but… this is VERY troubling.
“If you have seen me, you have seen the Father.” 14:9
You said it again! They were going to stone you for that. Yet I am starting to get it.
“He who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also, and greater works that these will he do;
because I go to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, that I will do, that the Father may be
glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.”
“And if you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” 14:12,15
Of course I love you! Don’t go!! How can we do these works or even greater without You?
“I will ask the Father and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever.” 14:16
You’re handing us off to someone else?? Who could possibly replace You. We love YOU, not some new mentor…
“He is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him,
but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.” 14:17
