Day 33 — Walking in the Holy Spirit, Not the Flesh
Romans 8:1-39
1. The Spirit of life in Christ sets you free from the law of sin and death. 8:2
2. Since our flesh doesn’t keep the Law, Christ did it as a perfect offering for sin 8:3
3. This fulfills the just requirement of the Law when we walk according to the Spirit 8:4
4. Reap what your mind sows. Flesh begets flesh, according to Spirit, things of the Spirit 8:5
5. Set your mind on the fleshdeath. The mind set on the Spiritlife and peace 8:6
6. Mind set on flesh is hostile to God, not even able to subject self to God’s Law 8:7
7. Fleshly minds cannot please God. Can’t belong to Him 8:8,9
8. If Christ and the Spirit of God dwells in you: 8:9
a. you are not in the flesh 8:9
b. the spirit is alive, even though body is dead because of sin 8:10
c. God Who raised Christ from the dead will give life to you through His Spirit in you 8:11
9. Those living according to the flesh must die 8:13
10. Brethren, if by the Spirit, putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live 8:13
11. All who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God 8:14
12. We have the spirit of adoption, not slavery and cry out Abba! Father! 8:15
13. The Holy Spirit testifies with our spirit that we are His children 8:16
14. If we are children, then His heirs as well, fellow heirs with Christ 8:17
15. Suffering is part of the package , so is being glorified with Him 8:17,23
16. The Spirit helps in our weakness 8:26
17. The Spirit helps when we don’t know how to pray 8:26
a. intercedes for us according to the will of God 8:26,27
b. searches our hearts 8:27
b. translates our deep groanings 8:26
18. He conforms us to the image of His Son 8:29
19. Nothing can separate us from the love of God 8:39
Questions:
1. Paul wrote half of the New Testament, yet he struggled with his flesh as outlined in Romans 7.
Do you feel unworthy (“O wretched man that I am”) at times to be an instrument of God when you have been walking in the flesh?
How does Paul overcome that feeling?
2. What is the biggest obstacle to walking in the Spirit for you?
3. How do we put to death the deeds of the body?
4. Where does the sense of belonging to God come from?
5. Looking back, can you remember your lowest low in suffering?
Did you cry out to God?
Did He answer?
Now that that suffering is behind you (or is it?), how does that process of deepening you through trials compare to that retreat where there was great teaching and you gained new insights?
6. Is the Holy Spirit’s “searching our hearts” a scary thing or a comforting thing or something else?
Why?
7. Is there a way you can remind yourself to be choosing to walk in the Spirit daily?
(Be careful. This can become mechanical external behavior change rather than responding to Him.)
